BMW and Philips subsidiary NXP have invented a prototype multifunctional car key that functions as a credit card for cashless transactions including shopping, public transport e-ticketing, tolls and parking payments, and much more.Obvious security concerns associated with the theft of such a multifunctional device are alleviated through online monitoring of the key’s activities, as well as further security features that are expected to be put in place when the device hits the market some time next year. Although the market’s acceptance of such a potentially double-edged sword remains to be seen, BMW remains optimistic of its eventual widespread adoption.

This is just plain dumb. The upper class individual that BMW markets its cars to here in the United States dont care about credit cards built into a key. They relish the idea of an expensive wallet and a black or platinum AMEX card. This may be a hit, but I'm betting against it. From a marketing point of view, I say it lasts 6 months tops
